My most recent work has been an exploration in rusting images onto steel plates. This series of pieces was made by silkscreening images onto steel plates, then forcing the steel to rust by soaking it in nitric acid. The acid rapidly oxidizes the un-coated steel, and the image develops. The levels and shades of rust, and the random patterns formed, happen over time and are largely uncontrollable, giving each piece unique textures and colors. I have been working with steel as my medium for some time. I find the medium I am using often has a direct connection to the concepts behind my work. The broad conceptual thought behind my images tends to focus on the different relationships between humans and our environment. Half of the imagery for this body of work comes from designs I have created by cropping and extracting pieces of tree branch photos, and then recobining them. The recombined shapes interest me because of their symbol or sigil-like quality. The other half of the pieces in the show are rustings made from photos of old weathered freight trains. Im compelled by the layers of decay and graffiti, the industrial aesthetic of the bolts and rivets, the filth, and the stenciled markings used by the railroad. These layers of images combine to create what I think are compelling compositions that speak to the history of the marks made.
